Part 1: The Importance of a Technician in Upbuoy
In Upbuoy, a "technician" is the person who performs the service stops. Every scheduled stop on a route must be assigned to a technician. This is fundamental to how Upbuoy organizes your business, enabling features like:
Route Assignments
Building efficient daily routes for each person on your team.
Field App Experience
Allowing technicians to view their daily schedule, complete stops, and record service details from their mobile device.
Reporting
Tracking labor costs, service times, and overall technician performance.
"What if I'm a solo operator?"
No problem! If you are the owner and the only person running routes, you are your first technician. In this step, you'll simply add your own name. This tells Upbuoy that you'll be the one assigned to service stops.
Part 2: A Guided Walkthrough of the Onboarding Step
After setting up your company name in the first step of onboarding, you'll land on the "Add Your First Technician" screen.
Here's how to complete this step:
Step 1: Identify Who to Add
If you are the primary (or only) technician: You will use your own name.
If you have a lead technician: You can enter their name here.
Note: This step adds the technician role to a user. For this first step, it will assign the technician role to your own user account. You can add more team members with separate logins later in the Settings menu.
Step 2: Fill Out the Technician's Name
You will see a simple form on the left side of the screen:
First Name: Enter the first name of the technician.
Last Name: Enter the last name of the technician.
As you type, you'll notice the ID card on the right side of the screen updates in real-time. This visualization helps you see how the technician's name will appear within the app.

Step 3: Using the Helper Buttons
You have two convenient buttons below the name fields:
"Use My Info"
If you are the technician, click this button. It will automatically populate the fields with the first and last name from your Upbuoy user account, which you created during sign-up.
"Clear"
This button will clear the First Name and Last Name fields if you want to start over.
Step 4: Continue to the Next Step
Once the name is entered correctly, click the "Continue" button. This saves your technician information and takes you to the next step of the onboarding process.
Part 3: Key Concepts & Pro Tips
User vs. Technician
In Upbuoy, a "user" is anyone with a login. A "technician" is a user who can be assigned to service routes. A user can be an administrator, a technician, or both. This first onboarding step simply ensures your account is flagged as a technician so you can assign yourself to routes.
Don't Worry About Perfection
You are not creating a permanent, unchangeable record here. You can easily add more technicians, edit names, and manage user roles later in Settings > Users & Permissions. This step is just about getting your first technician into the system so you can build your first route.
Key Takeaways
Every service stop in Upbuoy must be assigned to a technician.
Solo operators should add themselves as the first technician.
You can modify technician information and add more team members later in Settings.
Next Steps
You've successfully added your first technician! Now that Upbuoy knows who will be performing the service, the next step is to add who they will be servicing.
